Your Next BFF: Angela Chase

If you're like me, you didn't become aware of the 1994 classic, My So Called Life, until you were well past the age at which the resolutions to the freshman year dramas would have been of any use to you. Though I was unable to experience all that is this gem of a high school melodrama in its heyday, that only gave me more permission to be in love with it as an adult : ).

The cast. Our girl is dead center.

The show has everything you could ever want in a more serious, girl's POV version of Boy Meet's World: friends growing apart then together again, awkward can-I-touch-you-there moments, and the obligatory "I think my BFF is a psycho drug addict" episode. But my favorite part about this show, is the impeccable 90s fashion. And that's where this lil lady comes in:

Now, there's no question that all of the characters are exemplary sartorial examples of the 90s (Patty's mom jeans are one in a million), but with her terrible awesome granny florals, her mini dress + boots combos, and her ubiquitous employment of plaid, Angela is by far the queen of the 90s.

Okay, so she has championed the 90s staples, and that's all well and good, but I'll need more than a wardrobe master for my BFF. Why do I love her? She's exactly like I was at that stage in my life (only cooler), and I'm betting it's the same for most of you as well. She's totally confused, endearing, sweet, lovestruck, goofy, etc. Here's a peek:

See? Totes adorbs. I highly, highly recommend this show if you're in the market for, I don't know, perfect television. And you'll totally develop a major girl crush on Angela, just like I have. I might actually head over to netflix now to re-start the series. SO good!

P.S.- How great is that band name? Frozen Embryos!!

Bossypants

This is how mother nature forced me to dress on Friday. She can be quite the diva.

Rain Boots: Target

Unlike most girls (I think), I don't really enjoy wearing my rain boots. I realize that with the return in popularity of the boots over the past few years, there are so many options for potential cuteness, but I find them clunky and cumbersome. Perhaps if I could get my hands on a sleeker, more compact version, like these, I'd be more inclined to wear them.
Ah, well. I found these at Target for $5 last year, so they'll do.

Be sure to check back tomorrow to see who I've got lined up for the "Your Next BFF" post! Hint: She's my fictional twin.

Happy Monday!

Socks: Target
Loafers: Target, altered by me

This sweater is Charlie Brown through and through, no? I hadn't ever thought of pairing this sweater with this western shirt before, but it was one of those times when I just woke up and it felt right.

These loafers didn't originally have the metallic toe, but due to unforeseen circumstances involving my car and oil, I had to either get rid of them, or try and make it work. I'd like for them to look better than they do, but they'll suffice.

How are you spending the remainder of your weekend?

An Attempt to Not Suck: Domesticity

Admittedly, I'm not a superstar in the kitchen. I've gotten slightly better due to the somewhat substantial change in my diet over the past two years that requires more nutritional enterprise (more on that later), but I'm still not a magician. My lack of food wizardry also stems from the fact that I live with someone who a) loves to cook and b) happens to be amazing at it, so, it was only destiny that I became lazy.
However, I do have some spare time on occasion, and will periodically use that spare time to try and convince myself that I'm not a completely lost cause in the domesticity department. Hence, these breakfast muffins:

I don't really feel comfortable calling myself a vegan, as I do "cheat" from time to time, and don't always use animal-free products (looking at you, mascara) but I am a vegetarian with vegan tendencies. I'm also a person who needs a hearty breakfast; none of this piece-of-fruit-and-I'm-set business for me. So, in looking up a good vegan breakfast recipe, I found these apple muffins to be a sufficient option.

I was definitely concerned with the fate of these babies, as I improvised several ingredients and amounts. I didn't want to pay $7 for what appeared to be a 10 lb. bag of pastry flour, so I used more of the whole wheat flour with some flax meal. Not to mention, I'd forgotten how much flour I'd already put in at one point, so all bets were off. I used olive oil instead of corn oil, the chunks of apple were way too big, and I had to chop my ginger instead of grating it because, well, I am grater-less. I also did what one of the commenters suggested: decreasing the amount of flour and adding some baking soda and baking powder to give the muffins some rise.

Despite my cluelessness and pure guesswork carefully calculated alterations, they turned out pretty edible! The reviewers on the recipe website were right- they are super dense, which is exactly what I wanted. They also made my apartment smell amazing!

What? Flowers don't grow out of your baked goods? Amateurs.

I would definitely recommend these as a grab-and-shove-in-the-general-vicinity-of-my-mouth-as-I-literally-run-to-school breakfast option. Or as an I-like-food option : ). And don't forget to let me know if you try them!

Crazy Flower Lady

Sweater: Gifted by a co-worker
Skirt: Thrifted
Tights: Kohl's? They were a gift.
Booties: Target

Maybe you've been able to tell by now, or, if you have me on instagram (@leahjgee) you've known for awhile: I love mixing prints. It's pretty lame, actually, how much excitement I get from it. Anyway, I thought it was about time I tried the floral-on-floral trend I've been hearing so much about. It's suggested that you stay in the same color palette, to make things flow a bit easier, but I didn't really do that. It sort of just happened, and I thought it worked. What do you think?

This is actually a midi length skirt, of the trumpet variety. I tried it on at its natural length, and with the sweater, the proportions just seemed off. So, I belted it pretty snugly at my waist and just kept rolling the belt over until the hem reached my desired height. Oh, the things I make time for when I have more important things to do.... And in case you hadn't noticed, this skirt was pretty much made for twirling. I think I was dancing to Phil Spector's Greatest Hits at that moment. I <3 Motown.

I don't know about you, but I couldn't be more thrilled that it's the weekend (Friday totally counts). The past two weeks have been super stressful for me, and I've definitely been eating my feelings. Seriously, like everything in sight. It's sort of gross. But I'm getting back on the regular human portion size/running wagon this weekend, so hopefully I'll feel like myself again very soon. Thanks for reading, guys!
