Drive-By Peaches + Big Tree (Very image heavy!)

Description of Photo

During our stint as a homeless couple (the weekend we stayed at a friend's house between leases), Matt and I decided to make use of our simultaneous down time by driving out to the neighboring town of McBaine to visit the famous, massive Burr Oak tree, locally known + loved as "Big Tree."

On our way out to the giant, we happened upon a roadside produce stand that we just couldn't pass up. The man who ran the stand was so sweet, and had several charming stories about his grandson ready and waiting for us. I'm telling you, this little outing of ours couldn't have been any more quaint. Enjoy!

Though it's moniker is primitive at best, this tree really is a beauty. It's surrounded by fields of nothing for miles, which allows any onlooker to really appreciate its size (91 inches in diameter; one of the largest Burr Oaks in the country!).

I have to say, driving out to the middle of nowhere with the windows down, listening to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, eating a peach just acquired at a roadside stand almost completely made up for any hassles we experienced while moving. It was that special.

Well hello, there. It's been more than minute, and a very hot one (temperature, not length) at that. What can I say, except moving woes, internet setup lag, etc., etc., blah blah blah? I'm here now, and we all need to focus more on the present anyway, right? : )

These were taken on one of the last days at our old place, in the annex to this lumber yard down the street. It's not the most picturesque place, but it's where we take our dog to pooh this is real life, y'all. Speaking of real life, did you see my roots? A 'lil too real for the internet, perhaps.

Without going into too much detail, I've been experiencing several not-exactly-asked-for, rapid-fire changes in my life. But instead of looking at these things negatively, I've decided I'm going to turn the extra time I have into passion for more creative endeavors. Translation: I hope to put more effort into this blog and really make it something special. I hope you all stick around! : )

How do you deal with unexpected changes in your life? My ritual almost always involves ice cream.

Dress: Vintage; Belt: Target; Socks: Target; Shoes: Tuto

This is what I wore a couple of weeks ago when Matt and I met friends for dinner at a Mexican restaurant most excellent. I think I made the right choice in wearing a dress that night, because I generally leave that place too stuffed to move. The camouflage this dress provides was greatly appreciated two-three food babies later.

How could I not go home with this dress? I made it mine on a vintage trip with Lydia while Matt was away; during which I got down on one knee and and said something poetic involving the words "love," "eternity," and "layered sleeves/chest embellishments," and before I knew it, this dress and I were living happily ever after. After I cut off a significant amount of length, that is. We all know long term relationships require work.

How was everyone's week? Is anyone getting in any last minute adventures before summer winds down?

Flash Pt. II

Sometimes you have an outfit you'd really like documented, but the daylight has already gone away because you spent the evening hours after work getting your car towed and having ice cream for dinner, so you resort to flash in your run-down, semi-haradous, not-usable-in-any-form garage.
You still think the world deserves to see this genius ensemble you've created (massive amounts of self-deprecation and sarcasm here, folks. Just to be clear.) so you put the photos up for everyone to see anyway, despite not being the biggest fan of flash. You shrug and mutter "whatever" through the side of a slanted mouth, while giving yourself the side-eye, and hope you will get some sort of a free pass because you're still learning and the first batch wasn't too shabby (just sayin').

This bow tie is a $5 hair clip from Walgreen's.
Also, I was wearing these shoes.

That's all! : )

I know this is my blog and I can post whatever/as frequently as I want, but you all are always there with interesting/sweet things to say. Thus, I feel the need to apologize for my absence lately. I'm not sure if you're aware or not (jk) but moving is simultaneously the worst + most exhausting activity in the history of humankind. I won't bore you with all of the details, but there were complications with move-in/move-out dates, all of which leave Matt and I (and our mind-blowingly generous, superhero friends) the job of moving twice. Hopefully, with this knowledge, you can understand the lack of posts. We're currently out of our old place and staying with a friend until we can move into our new place. So, though I plan to have a couple of posts scheduled up for this week, I can't promise an improvement on the frequency yet. But I love you guys a lot and really appreciate your reading my nonsense.

Anyway- no full length shots for this post. These photos were taken at the campus of a local college right across the street from our old apartment, and though the campus is quite beautiful, I always walk away from outfit photos there unsatisfied. Hence, the four that made the cut.

I paired this top and bottom together because I want to try to get more into denim on denim, and while this isn't the most daring combination, it's a crisp step in the right direction. And while I'm not too crazy about colored denim, I think something printed might be my next venture within the denim on denim world.
I love these shorts so much, but I hardly get the chance to wear them, being as I spend most of my time during the day at a preschool. Call me crazy, but there's no way in hell I'm wearing white bottoms around play-dough and lunchtime with 2-4 year olds.

'Til next time!

So...I know photos are not supposed to be taken in direct sunlight, but I really love this used bookstore by our apartment, and I couldn't resist. Sue me. Adams' is one of those musty places with books covering every square inch of possible floor space, leaving only a small walking path and a couple of inches of ventilation just shy of the ceiling. It's a great place to find a seat on an available stack of books and just get lost in whatever your heart desires. Thus, I felt the need to pose in front of it : ).

This skirt is one of my favorite vintage pieces. It's a great mustard-almost-brown color and reeks of mad men- what's not to love? And yes, I used a tied shirt as an accessory, a la Jennifer; I try to brink back the 90s as much as possible.

Happy weekend, y'all! Make it a good one!

Well, it isn't exactly mint + red, but it's close enough for now without breakin' the bank.

I've loved this dress ever since the moment I laid eyes on it. When I brought it home, it was almost down to my ankles, but Matt's mom was so kind as to hem it for me. I told him that if I don't manage to learn to sew before Christmas, we'll be adding a few extra days onto our vacation, so as to leave room for his mom to teach me while we visit for the holidays. I could do so much good with some hemming and basic altering skills.

And, as you may have noticed, I have now entered the leather-backpack-as-purse arena, and I warn you, I may never go back. I'd been searching for some time for just the right one, and though this is not my dream cognac brown, I found it at my favorite vintage place in town for much cheaper than anything I was finding online. I love having a nice bag to carry my camera in, as well as my wallet and other purse essentials. What about you? do you prefer small, chapstick + I.D. bags, or carry-alls like a backpack?

How's everyone's week so far? I am forever weekend-ready.
