Triumphant Return

We LIve Upstairs Triumphant return Outfit

This is what I wore during one of the first days of our Christmas break in Cape Girardeau. A day full of thrifting, eating and last-minute gift shopping (though the eating part is always my favorite : )). This was one of the only days I could walk around without a coat on, a feat in itself for late December, and the next day the temperature dropped probably 20 degrees. We even had to come back to Columbia early because of an impending snowstorm...I'd say winter has finally arrived.

Buttermilk Biscuits

We Live Upstairs Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

Everyone has a couple recipes that seem to stick around at holiday dinners year after year, right? These buttermilk biscuits fall into that category for us; Matt and I have made them every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas since we started dating, and they haven't let us down since. Enjoy!

Go Buy This
-2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
-2 tsp. baking powder
-1/2 tsp. baking soda
-1 tsp. sugar
-3/4 tsp. table salt
-1 cup cold buttermilk
-8 Tbsp. unsalted butter + 2 Tbsp. melted for brushing tops of biscuits later
-Parchment paper

Do This:
1. Move an oven rack to the middle and set preheat for 475.
2. Melt 8 Tbsp. butter and let cool while you do step 3 (or for about 5-6 minutes)
3. Whisk dry ingredients in large bowl (I know, whisking dry stuff is weird but just do it)
4. Combine cold buttermilk and 8 Tbsp. melted (but cooled!) butter in a medium bowl and stir until the butter becomes slightly clumpy.
5. Add wet mixture to dry ingredients and stir until incorporated and dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
6. Use a greased 1/4 cup dry measure scoop to form drops, and, well, drop biscuits onto parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake until tops are golden brown (12-14 minutes).
7. Once out of the oven, brush tops of biscuits with remaining 2 Tbsp. melted butter. Move to wire rack to cool for ~5 minutes before serving. Or, immediately when they come out of the oven, if you're Matt.

Yum!

Our Winter Wonderland

We Live Upstairs Our Winter Wonderland

We may not have the time or funds to go all Elf this year, but I'm really in love with the atmosphere we've created with the dollars we do have, and the vintage/thrifted finds we've come across. And I'm also very thankful that the one who loves me most, loves me enough to put aside his indifference toward the season and indulge my red & green colored whims : ).

We started collecting animal ornaments right after Christmas last year, so this time around we've got quite the little herd going.

Mint, Pink, & Gray

We Live Upstairs Mint Pink & Gray Outfit

There's something about pastels paired with neutrals that just does it for me. The mint & pink together toe the line of excessive girlyness, but the gray is there to bring 'er back 'round to the grownup side of life. Not that I spend a terrible amount of time there; thumb through any of my archives and you'll notice a fantastical theme throughout the majority of my outfits. Sometimes, that's just the best way to live your life: dress like you're seven, flash your ID everywhere you go to prove that you're 23. TRUTH.

Preppy Twist

We Live Upstairs Preppy Twist Outfit

The first time I wore this, it was about 20 degrees cooler outside, so I paired it with brown, knee-high boots; taking a walk on the preppy side. The whole thing felt a bit too Ralph Lauren for my taste, but a couple days later, when December provided me with a 70 degree Sunday (what?!), I took the opportunity to quirk it up a bit and trade the boots for a pair of sandals I didn't get to wear enough this summer. Equipped with my oddball footwear, chipped toenail polish, and mixed patterns, I ventured out in my version of preppy to a local park to lay in the grass and pretend it's July. A day well spent, if you ask me.

I've got an exciting weekend coming up! My birthday was yesterday, (so naturally it's my birthday until the end of the week : )), Matt's graduating tomorrow, his parents are coming up for the occasion (and bringing our new mattress and treadmill with them!), and our anniversary (third) is Sunday! Phew! See y'all Monday!

It's my Birthday!

Description of Photo

Today I am 23 years old. I do not know everything, but I'm glad I know:

-that following the plan doesn't work for everyone
-that humor and a genuine, deep-rooted concern for others is what attracts me to my favorite people
-that anything beyond two drinks and a beer is asking for it
-that I am not invincible
-that we made that big move when I was seven for a reason
-that you're not supposed to eat the corn husk on the outside of a tamale

I'm excited to learn even more this year and overjoyed at the changes and new chapters coming my way. See you tomorrow!

P.S.- Between Blogger and Bloglovin', I'm now at 90 followers. I'd love to do a giveaway when I reach 100; what do you think? Any requests?

Holiday Nails Grown Up: Army Green & Gold

We Live Upstairs Holiday nails grown up: army green gold

I wanted to incorporate some christmas into my nail-wear, but without going overboard on the cute, so I landed on the grown-up version of holiday nails with army green and an accent of gold. I feel christmas-y but not like I live in Who-ville: mission accomplished.

Ugly Sweater Love

We Live Upstairs Ugly Sweater Love Outfit

Anyone else feel weird when they see pictures of "Ugly Sweater" parties on Facebook and genuinely like all of the "ugliness" displayed? Matt and I were looking at the page of a mutual friend who was featured in such a photo album, and he pointed out that the sweater I was wearing because I love a crazy pattern probably would have made a debut at that party, had it been made available to someone. We then continued on through the album, and there were more than a handful of sweaters I would gladly wear IRL, given the chance. What does this say about me?

Red and Plaid and Stripes All Over

We Live Upstairs Red and Plaid and Stripes All Over Outfit

I have been all over some stripe mixing lately. I haven't been able to photograph every ensemble containing them, but trust; there've been a lot. I've noticed that I tend to gravitate toward stripe on stripe or stripe on plaid. And, lucky for me, these two happened to be getting chummy near each other in my ever-crowded closet; convenient since I've been furrowing my brow over what to pair with this skirt for a month or two. Lesson learned: sometimes the closet gods lead you right where you need to go.

Well, I'm off to enjoy some great company, pizza, and drinks for my birthday tonight (my actual DOB isn't until the 13th), and I hope you get to do the same (not necessarily in honor of my birthday, but just because you have great friends who also like pizza. However, if you'd like to raise a glass to my 23rd year, I wouldn't be mad at that ; ))!
See you Monday!

P.S.- If you haven't noticed, I'm more than mildly obsessed with borders, lines, shapes, and cut-outs right now. Indulge me for the moment, k? : )
